The recently concluded PPL Winter’18 Edition on PokerBaazi.com was a tremendous success, attracting record-breaking fields in every event throughout the duration of the Series. While the massive player fields produced jaw-dropping prize pools and thus plenty of big winners, finishing miles ahead from the rest was Nitish “Somnath” Gupta – who took down the 1 Crore Guaranteed Main Event – The MoneyMaker, defeating a field of 742 hopefuls for a surreal payday of INR 32,63,400!

The much anticipated event kicked off at 7pm on December the 16th and boasted a prize pool of 1 Crore with an INR 11,000 buy-in. Year after year, season after season, the PPL has grown continually to become the biggest online series in the country; and this Edition was no different. The MoneyMaker attracted a massive 742-player field, and with an addition 590 re-entries we saw the prize pool rocket to 1.33 Crore. Gupta tactically maneuvered through this massive field of players, which included the who’s who of Indian poker to take down the coveted bracelet, title and mammoth payday.

Team IPN caught up with the youngster following his incredible achievement, here’s what he had to say:

Congratulations Nitish! Could you tell us a little about yourself?

Thank you! I’m 27 and dropped out in my first year of college to take up poker full time. I initially started off by playing Sit’N’Gos, and slowly moved on to multi-table tournaments. Over the past 4 years or so, I’ve also been grinding cash games both live and online. I was born and brought up in Kolkata, and am presently based in Colombo.

What about The MoneyMaker? How did it all happen?

Well it’s a funny story really! I registered for the event thinking it was The Game Changer – with a 2 Crore Guarantee, only to find out later that it was The Moneymaker! Right from the start it was fortunately smooth sailing for me, and when I got to the Final Table I has a healthy stack and was running 2/9. My good continued and I found myself Heads-Up with “Versutus”. At one point I had a 4:1 chip lead over him, and that’s where it turned. I lost a few hands and suddenly my opponent had a 2:1 lead over me. Eventually though, the cards fell my way and I ended up taking it down!

Incredible! What are your views on online poker in India and PokerBaazi.com?

Poker is growing very fast in India. Online operators are doing a phenomenal job promoting the game through plenty of high-value tournaments.

PokerBaazi to me is just absolutely World Class! Amazing interface, which is in fact better than most International brands. On top of that, Navkiran Singh and his team are doing such an amazing job of improving every single day. It’s really commendable!

And lastly Nitish, any advice when it comes to poker?

Well I would say go out there and enjoy the game! Keep making mistakes, but keep learning and keep improving every day!

Thank you for your time Nitish, and we wish you the very best!
