Tournament poker has truly seen a massive hike in numbers in recent times. The idea of a return on investment of anything above 50x has attracted tons of players to the MTT felts. While plenty of hopefuls sign up for these events on a regular basis, only a select few truly find long-term success in tournament poker.
Pune-based Neel “Worm33” Joshi is one such player who seems to have mastered this particular format of the game. At the mere age of 21, Joshi has already recorded multiple titles and 5-figure paydays, setting himself up for a bright future in the rapidly growing mind sport. On Wednesday, he went on to clench yet another title – THE VEGAS 10L GTD on PokerBaazi.com, where he walked away with a whopping INR 2,36,250!
Team IPN managed to catch up with the whizz-kid who is currently pursuing Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani. Here’s what he had to say:
Hi Neel, and a big Congratulations! First up, tell us how poker become a part of your life?
Thank you! Well I began playing poker with some friends when I was in my second year of college. I gradually started putting in more hours, and eventually made the shift to MTTs in May’18. I really believe poker to be a game of skill. It is a test of your decision making abilities, intuition, discipline and objective analysis of a situation.
Tell us about THE VEGAS tournament. Any particular strategy you had in mind?
I generally stick to a lower variance strategy – something I’ve started liking when playing big field MTTs. I got a stack during the late stages, while allowed me to bully relentlessly! I made some conservative folds, but didn’t really get my chips in with marginal holdings at any point.
What would you tell someone who is looking to get into MTTs?
I have a loooooong way to go myself, so not really in a position to give advice! But if there’s something I have to say, I’d simply ask you to show up. Variance is a bitch, and you’re gonna have more losing days than winning ones. Just analyze your history, improve, and get back up after even getting demolished on a Sunday. That’s how it works!
True! Your thoughts on the massive announcement of the 2Crore GTD Game Changer?
As an MTT lover, I’m absolutely stoked about such a huge tournament and hope to give it my best shot! I haven’t been putting in much volume at the tables nor studying much poker right now to be honest. I have an IIM-C interview on 18th Feb, and am dedicating my time towards preparing for that. Thankfully it’s before the Game Changer.
Good luck with that, and yes, great timing! Any feedback for the team at PokerBaazi?
I really like how the Baazi team is receptive to their customers’ wishes. Would definitely want Baazi to conduct multiple tournament series, satellites, and weekly MTT leaderboards which give a WSOP ME package.
Thanks for your time Neel, and we wish you the very best for the coming year!
