Working for yourself certainly is the ultimate dream of the generation. Having, experienced a fair share of horrible bosses, there is nothing like ‘Being Your Own Boss’. You decide the work hours, the dress code, Your Business, Your rules.
The grass is always greener on the other side, but its no easy task being your own boss. Being a model employee and staying inspired, motivated, creative and churning out work day in and day out on your own is no walk in the park. - Read, make time for it!
Yes, it might sound counter-intuitive to make time to read amidst your never-ending job list. But 45 minutes to an hour of reading a good book can do a world of good. Reading books in a different style (irrespective of the genre) than your own always helps pick up new ways/perspectives of approaching various problems. It serves as a great inspiration when you think you’ve hit a dead end.
- Spend time looking at the bigger picture
Zoom out often and realign focus on your mission. Two things you need to keep asking yourself, what do you want to create with your business? How far do you want your reach to extend? Don’t get caught up in the stresses of invoicing, editing and PowerPoint templates and lose sight of your mission.
- Write down goals and review
Write down goals that help you take small steps to achieve your mission. Track its progress to ensure you don’t get stuck in a rut.
- Seek a Mentor
Spending a lot of time working alone can often make you lose sight of your purpose. Seek a Mentor, have someone guide you through these obstacles, share their knowledge and experiences with you, give you fresh perspectives and new blood to keep you motivated and powerful.
Being your own boss also means you a miss a few positives that a 9-5 work environment gives you. As much as it’s nice to do your own thing, but a lot of creativity comes from working with other people.
Make it a point to grab lunch with a friend and sound off ideas, attend local networking events, or reach out to contacts in the industry to ensure you don’t get left behind in your own bubble.
- Time is of essence
It is essential that you find a schedule that works for you and your brain. When you are your own boss it is important to discipline yourself and set boundaries with your friends and family and clients during your productive hours. Learn to be smart with your time and channelize your energy for the importance things.
No matter in which field your being your own boss, these small tips will help you get out of a rut and avoid an entrepreneurial burnout. Remember, the most foolish thing is to do things the same way and expect different results. Stay inspired, stay motivated and BE YOUR OWN BOSS!
