The Indians would have liked to have the 2018 World Poker Tour DeepStacks India INR 55,000 ($753USD) No-limit Hold’em Main Event title to their name and Nikunj Jhunjhunwala did just that! He outlasted a field of 697 entries and some serious competition to bag this one. He took home a paycheck of INR 66,35,000 ($92,176 USD) along with the bragging rights for his first place finish!
Nikunj wasn’t the front-runner on the final table as he started in eight position with 24 big blinds. His first chip up came when he knocked out Amit Jain. The next big one came in when Jhunjhunwala’s Queens were up against Akshay Nasa’s Kh Jc. The river gave Nikunj quads and sent Nasa packing in sixth place.
Deepak Singh was the chip leader when play began on the final table, however, the chip lead didn’t hold him good as he ended up sliding down the leaderboard. Soon he went all in with his pocket jacks and Junjunwala got the better of him with Ac 5c when he made the nut flush on a Qs 9c 2c 2h Kc board.
Nikhil’s heads-up counter part Sahil Mahboobani played steady and gradually increased his chip stack during the initial levels of play. Sahil went on to eliminate Vidur Singhal in third, having a slight lead over Jhunjhunwala when heads up play began. The lead toggled hands and by the time it came down to the final hand, Jhunjhunwala had a massive lead.
Being dealt the Kc and 8s Mahboobani moved all in for 1.6 million from the small blind and Jhunjhunwala called with 9s 5s. The board ran Qd 10d 5h 9d 8s and Jhunjhunwala hit his two pair wrapping up the pot and the game to his name. Sahil settled for the second place pay-check of ($64,641 USD).
