Sosia Jiang Crushes The Sydney Championships High Roller
The Sydney Championships Event #11: A$20,000 High Roller saw a strong and competitive field of 28 players. It was New Zealand’s Sosia Jiang who powered through the field and emerged victorious for a monstrous $197,536 prize.
“It was such a strong field,” Jiang shared after her win. “These were unquestionably some of Australia’s best poker players.”
Jiang entered the final table in the chip lead despite facing the tough field. The competition was fierce with Jonathan Karamalikis, Corey Kempson, Andy Lee, and Michael Addamo making it to the final table (but failed to cash).
Jiang stuck to her guns and was soon playing heads up with a small advantage over Mattew Wakeman. She gradually worked up that advantage to a 13:1 lead and the game played out its final hand.
Wakeman went all-in with the nut straight holding nine-eight on a seven-six-five flop showcasing two clubs. With a jack-eight Jiang called with one club and the odds of a backdoor flush draw and an open-ended straight draw.
Fate went knocking on Jiang’s door as the clubs hit the felts with the turn and river to give Jiang the flush and the tournament winning hand. Unfortunately Wakeman has to settle for the runners up prize of A$159,600 ($118,522).
