Daniel Negreanu clinches his third WSOP Player Of The Year Title

All eyes were on the final event of the 2019 World Series of Poker Europe as the game would determine who would be crowned the 2019 World Series of Poker Player of the year. Shaun Deeb, the defending champion, was in a great position to snatch the POY title from Daniel Negreanu, who led the table at that stage. Heading into the final event third in chips and with just 11 players remaining, Deeb needed a fifth-place finish to make back to the head of the table.

Close, but yet so far, Deeb, unfortunately, ran into a tough spot early in the game in a blind vs blind situation against Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier. Deeb held a J-9 and Bertran, J-8, both checked to see a flop that ran Q-10-9. Deeb fired 250,000 and was raised by his opponent to 800,000 and called. A 10 flipped on the turn and Bertrand bet 1,775,000 and Deeb went all-in for 3,050,000. A quick call was made as Bertrand had hit his straight. The river threw an inconsequential ace, ending Deeb’s run in 11th place for €12,453, but sadly ending his run for his second WSOP POY title.

This marked the victor of the WSOP POY, the legend, Daniel Negreanu! He was the only player to have won two titles in 2004 and 2013 and now became the only three-time POY titleholder! What’s more interesting about the win is ‘Kid Poker’ made it happen without winning a bracelet, making him the first! Talk about setting new benchmarks!

Negreanu racked up a total of 24 cashes and 4,074.88 points to put him atop the standings. His cashes included five final tables and two runner-up finishes, but no bracelets to add to the six he’s previously won. Take a look at his glorious conquests.
